Crisis in the Abayudaya schools
Dear friends,
The two Abayudaya schools in Uganda are facing a crisis. This past spring the Ugandan government announced that they will no longer provide funding for private high schools, including the Abayudaya-run high school. And just this past month, a major partner organization did not renew their $40,000/year grant to the schools due to a change in their policy. This means a loss of $54,000 – more than half of the schools’ annual budget.

We must now double our efforts to keep the Abayudaya elementary and high schools open, where Jewish, Christian and Muslim students have been learning, eating, and playing together peacefully. It is heartbreaking to think of students whose education might be disrupted – whose parents cannot afford tuition at other schools, or who live too far to go elsewhere, or who might now face the past harassment that the Abayudaya schools have erased. And some of these children would go hungry without the school nutrition program – supported by Kulanu donors – which provides breakfast and lunch to all students at both schools. Can you help us save the Abayudaya schools?
I am happy to say that we have received a generous $10,000 challenge grant from the Estelle Friedman Gervis Foundation. The foundation will add another $10,000 to the first $20,000 we raise! Please go to www.kulanu.org/donate today and earmark your gift for the Abayudaya community of Uganda so it will be matched by the Gervis Foundation. And because this is such an urgent time for the Abayudaya community, I’d like to ask you to consider giving more generously this year, even doubling or tripling what you’ve contributed in the past. Thank you so much for responding to this urgent appeal.
Please also reach out to your friends, colleagues, family, and others and tell them why this is such an important cause to support. For tips, see below or visit www.kulanu.org/getinvolved/fundraisingtips.php
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
Harriet
