Bat Mitzvah: My Jewish Journey
Background
The Abayudaya Community, a vibrant Jewish community in Uganda, is known for its dedication
to Jewish traditions and values. However, many families face financial challenges that limit their
ability to celebrate significant religious milestones such as Bat Mitzvah. Bat Mitzvah is a
transformative event in a young girl’s life, marking her transition into adulthood and
responsibility within the Jewish faith. Ensuring every girl has the opportunity to celebrate this
milestone is vital for their spiritual, cultural, and personal growth.
Bat Mitzvah is a significant milestone in Jewish life, symbolizing a young girl’s transition into
adulthood and her responsibilities as a Jewish community member. For the Abayudaya
community in Uganda, this ceremony holds deep cultural and spiritual meaning. However, many
families face financial constraints that hinder their daughters from fully experiencing this
important rite of passage.
In response, this project seeks to empower girls in the Abayudaya community by facilitating
meaningful Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Through training, preparation, and provision of essential
resources, we aim to ensure that each girl has the opportunity to embrace her Jewish identity and
heritage with pride and dignity.
Objective
To support girls in the Abayudaya Community to celebrate their Bat Mitzvahs, fostering a deeper
connection to their Jewish identity and empowering them through mentorship and training.
1. Training and Preparation
o Provide a comprehensive Bat Mitzvah training program, including lessons on
Jewish traditions, Torah readings, and the significance of mitzvot.
o Organize mentorship sessions with community leaders and elders to guide the
girls on their Jewish journey.
2. Provision of Essentials
o Supply a modest yet beautiful dress for each girl to wear during her Bat Mitzvah
ceremony.
o Cover costs for Kiddush and refreshments for family and community members to
join the celebration.
3. Community Celebration
o Organize a meaningful and inclusive Bat Mitzvah ceremony to honor each girl,
showcasing her dedication and growth.
Budget
The cost of sponsoring one girl’s Bat Mitzvah is approximately $200, covering:
Training and mentorship: $30
Dress and accessories: $50
Kiddush (refreshments and communal meal): $100
Impact
By sponsoring girls for their Bat Mitzvahs, this initiative will:

milestones.
