{"id":814,"date":"2014-11-19T13:30:59","date_gmt":"2014-11-19T18:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kulanuarchive.kulanu.org\/?p=814"},"modified":"2019-05-21T17:52:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T21:52:00","slug":"grants-fund-latin-american-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/grants-fund-latin-american-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Kulanu \u201cMini-Grants\u201d Fund Latin American Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Latin American Communities with a Kulanu Connection<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thanks to the generosity of the Good People Fund (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodpeoplefund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.goodpeoplefund.org<\/a>), Kulanu set up a new program this summer for supporting Jewish communities in Latin America. The Mini-Grant Program distributes funds for smaller community projects based on applications submitted by the communities.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Kulanu received six applications from six different communities and distributed five mini-grants. In Sao Paulo, Brazil, this gift helped acquire enough Portuguese-Hebrew prayer books for the whole community to use. (See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cyan.olm.net\/~kulanu\/b2\/?p=2132\">our blog post<\/a>\u00a0on this, with a video of the Shil do Tatuape community singing their thanks for the siddurim). We\u2019ve also sent funds for siddurim to the Sephardic community of Quito, Ecuador, that is in the process of converting. (You can read about a Kulanu volunteer\u2019s recent experience with this community in the next issue of\u00a0<em>KulanuNews<\/em>!)<\/p>\n<p>For the Adat Israel congregation, a recently converted Reform community in Guatemala City,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/guatemala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guatemala<\/a>, we helped acquire various Jewish books with Spanish translation for an adult learning program. And another mini-grant was dispersed to a \u201cnew\u201d community in Santa Marta, Colombia \u2013 a recently converted, egalitarian Jewish community. The funds were used to purchase Jewish educational resources and a chalkboard for their new Hebrew school classroom.<\/p>\n<p><em>Good news from the Good People Fund:<\/em>\u00a0We are delighted to announce that the Good People Fund has agreed to renew their gift in 2015, so we can continue this Mini-Grant Program next year!
