Yaakov Baruch\u00a0<\/strong>was born in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and grew up in Manado. He learned of his\u00a0maternal Jewish mother\u2019s background<\/strong>\u00a0while a youth, and began to research his\u00a0Dutch Jewish roots<\/strong>\u00a0while in college. Yaakov visited Jewish communities in\u00a0Singapore<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Israel<\/strong>,\u00a0Europe<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0America<\/strong>\u00a0and then chose more in-depth study of Judaism.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
In\u00a02000<\/strong>, Yaakov established a synagogue community in\u00a0Manado<\/strong>\u00a0and inaugurated the synagogue in\u00a02004<\/strong>, which was attended by Israel TV Channel 10. While there were Jews in Indonesia with Iraqi and Dutch roots, those communities which had existed in other parts of the country no longer exist. In\u00a02019<\/strong>, the Tondano community decided to change its Synagogue \u201cminhag<\/strong>\u201d to that of the Western Sephardic or Spanish and Portuguese Jewish communities. The\u00a0Shaar Hashamayim Synagogue<\/strong>\u00a0was consecrated in\u00a02022<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
