Representatives of\u00a0Jewish<\/strong>\u00a0communities in\u00a0Sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong>\u00a0gathered last weekend in\u00a0Ivory Coast<\/strong> to create an umbrella religious organization for the region.<\/p>\n

During a week of activities in\u00a0Abidjan<\/strong>, the attendees learnt about\u00a0Jewish practices<\/strong>, such as\u00a0“kosher”<\/strong>\u00a0slaughter and burial practices.<\/p>\n

“The purpose of this meeting is to bring\u00a0together<\/strong>\u00a0all of the emerging\u00a0Jewish<\/strong>\u00a0communities that are developing and growing throughout Africa. For example,\u00a0Nigeria<\/strong>\u00a0has over\u00a080<\/strong>\u00a0orthodox synagogues and it’s growing. And we find this in many countries across Africa. They’ve never met each other. (…) We spent a week together learning and studying the\u00a0Bible<\/strong>, the\u00a0Torah<\/strong>, the\u00a0Jewish<\/strong>\u00a0traditions and the\u00a0Jewish<\/strong>\u00a0law”, explained\u00a0Arieh Greenspan<\/strong>, co-organizer of the conference.<\/p>\n

The event was organized by a Jewish non-profit organization, Kulanu<\/strong><\/a>, with the aim of reuniting emerging Jewish communities in Africa.<\/p>\n

“They understand that Judaism in Sub-Saharan Africa is sometimes a new phenomenon. Though some believe they are descendants of lost tribes or Israelite tribes in the Bible. Some have found Judaism new. And this group of combined people are practicing Judaism, living Jewish lives, and for the first time ever got together to create an alliance”, added Bonita Sussman<\/strong>, known as\u00a0Rabbanit<\/strong>, president of\u00a0Kulanu<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the final day, ahead of the\u00a0Hannukah<\/strong>\u00a0celebrations, the group planned to consecrate a new\u00a0synagogue<\/strong>\u00a0with the laying of a\u00a0cornerstone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
