Please join Kulanu in reflecting on what \u201call of us\u201d accomplished together in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to share with you these selected highlights of our work over the past twelve months, as we continue to grow:<span id=\"more-1402\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/abayudaya\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Three Abayudaya children. Photo by joyofcolor.com\" width=\"275\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three Abayudaya children in Uganda.<br \/>\n<em>Photo by joyofcolor.com<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>In Uganda (Abayudaya)\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Abayudaya Community page on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/abayudaya\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/abayudaya<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kulanu continued to support the community\u2019s primary and secondary schools, which successfully educate nearly 800 Jewish, Christian, and Muslim students. (Yearly cost: $76 per student).<\/li>\n<li>Kulanu continued essential school nutrition programs, which increase students\u2019 attendance and performance at school. (Yearly cost: $41 per student for breakfast and lunch).<\/li>\n<li>We created an online\u00a0<a title=\"Aaron &amp; Naume Tribute Journal on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/tribute\/journal2012.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribute Journal<\/a>\u00a0honoring Abayudaya leaders Naume Sabano and husband Aaron Kintu Moses; proceeds from this \u2018ad book\u2019 benefited the two Abayudaya schools and the school meals program in Uganda.<\/li>\n<li>The Kulanu-Abayudaya Speaking Tour brought Aaron Kintu Moses of Uganda to congregations, schools, and Jewish centers in 13 cities across the U.S. to raise support for the Abayudaya Elementary and Semei Kakungulu High schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In Cameroon (Beth Yeshourun)\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Cameroon Community page on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/cameroon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/cameroon<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kulanu lent $22,500 so that the Cameroon Jewish community could purchase 250 acres of land and plant the first crop in a new cocoa farm that will provide employment and a better life for the Jewish community there.<\/li>\n<li>Serges Etele, a young leader of the Beth Yeshourun community in Cameroon, made his first visit to the U.S. for a one-month Kulanu-Cameroon Speaking Tour in February.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/elsalvador\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Student in El Salvador with new texts. They now have religious services and beit midrash (study sessions) every evening. They are using the industrial oven that Kulanu donated to make pizza for youth activities, challah, and matzah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In Ethiopia\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Ethiopia Community page on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/ethiopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/ethiopia<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With support from Kulanu, the Ethiopian North Shewa Zionist Organization created its own website (check it out at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enszo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.enszo.org<\/a>), and paid for a security guard and an Internet connection at their synagogue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In Guatemala (Adat Israel)\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Guatemala Community page on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/guatemala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/guatemala<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With Kulanu&#8217;s support, Rabbi Devorah Lynn traveled to Guatemala for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur to lead the Jewish community of Adat Israel, the first time in 15 years that the community had a rabbi for the High Holy Days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In Zimbabwe (Lemba)\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Lemba Community page on kulanu.org\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/lemba\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/lemba<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kulanu.phanfare.com\/5539544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Passover Seder in Mapakomhere, Zimbabwe. Fundraising continues for this project.<\/li>\n<li>The Harare Cyber-Learning Program is growing, as lessons are being distributed in the countryside. A new Facebook page, \u201cLembas for Judaism\u201d, contains educational material on Judaism.<\/li>\n<li>Weekly Shabbat services are held at the Mapakomhere School near the site of the new synagogue, under the leadership of Rabson Wuriga, a Kulanu colleague and leader of the Jewish community.<\/li>\n<li>Board member Sandy Leeder traveled to Zimbabwe where he provided food and wine for the first Lemba Passover seder in modern times. (Read his story on the Kulanu website, <a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/lemba\/passover.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>On the home front\u2026<\/em><br \/>\n<a title=\"Kulanu, Inc home page\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kulanu welcomed two new board members: Marcy Stein of New York City and Stuart \u201cSandy\u201d Leeder of Tzfat, Israel.<\/li>\n<li>Three strong new regional coordinators joined us: Daneel Schaechter for Latin America, Rabbi Elyse Goldstein for Guatemala, and Jim Michaelson for China.<\/li>\n<li>Jerry Krasny completed his first full year as an administrative volunteer and continues to be a great help around the Kulanu office in New York. <em>Thanks, Jerry!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We assisted three participants \u2013 one from Uganda and two from Kaifeng, China \u2013 to come to a month-long program of Jewish living and learning for young adults at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bci.ajula.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brandeis Collegiate Institute<\/a>\u00a0in California, and planned to bring several more participants for 2013.<\/li>\n<li>Our online learning volunteers continue to tutor students living in El Salvador, China, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe who study Hebrew, Jewish rituals, traditions, culture, and history.<\/li>\n<li>Kulanu published three e-books by Jewish scholars from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, about the history and traditions of their respective communities. (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org\/books<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Editor Judy Manelis published two extraordinary issues of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/newsletters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KulanuNews<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(the Fall 2012 issue is hot off the press now \u2013\u00a0<a title=\"Fall 2012 issue of &quot;KulanuNews&quot; - opens as a pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/newsletters\/2012-fall.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> to read it online now, in full color!).<\/li>\n<li>We continued to share information about our communities on our website (<a title=\"Kulanu, Inc home page\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.kulanu.org<\/a>), blog (<a title=\"Kulanu Blog\" href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/b2\/\">kulanu.org\/blog<\/a>), Facebook page (<a title=\"Kulanu, Inc page on Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kulanu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facebook.com\/kulanu<\/a>), and YouTube channel (<a title=\"Kulanu channel on YouTube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/kulanuvideo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youtube.com\/kulanuvideo<\/a>), and photo albums (<a title=\"Kulanu's photo albums on phanfare.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kulanu.phanfare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kulanu.phanfare.com<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Bequests of $31,000 each from Lynne Elson in 2011 and Roslyn Stone in 2012 allowed us to say \u201cyes\u201d to new initiatives.\u00a0<em>(Please consider Kulanu in your planned giving \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/contact\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact us<\/a>\u00a0to find out how).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today, I\u2019m asking you to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/app.etapestry.com\/hosted\/KulanuInc\/OnlineGiving.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donate generously<\/a> to Kulanu, an organization that relies primarily on volunteers to support Jewish communities around the world.
