Thanks!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o2u5r4f-Lfg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Kulanu<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>2022 Annual Report<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21390 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tanzania-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1026\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tanzania-2.png 1026w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tanzania-2-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tanzania-2-1024x413.png 1024w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tanzania-2-768x310.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1026px) 100vw, 1026px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jewish Development: Building Local Knowledge and Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helped with conversions of 94 adults and children in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> who had been practicing Judaism with passion and skill for many years.<\/li>\n<li>Celebrated Jewish weddings in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> for ten newly converted couples.<\/li>\n<li>Assisted in offering conversions in <strong>Italy<\/strong> to people who had studied all year \u2013 many of these converts were descendants of people forced to leave Judaism during the Inquisition.<\/li>\n<li>Distributed a Torah scroll, Purim Megillah, prayer books, mezuzahs, and ritual objects in <strong>Honduras<\/strong>, <strong>Uganda<\/strong>, <strong>Italy<\/strong>, <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong>, and <strong>Costa Rica<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>Our program manager, Jo Ann Friedman, lovingly guides people who want to donate Jewish ritual items and books, often from deceased relatives or dying congregations, and it comforts the donors to know that these objects will go on \u201cliving.\u201d Jo Ann also helps find travelers who take these books and Judaica to our partner communities. Their visits often are life-changing experiences for the couriers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Gave small grants so that our partner communities in <strong>Suriname<\/strong>, <strong>Pakistan<\/strong>, <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>, <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong>, and <strong>Cameroon<\/strong> could celebrate holidays together or in their homes.<br \/>\nAided Jewish cemetery projects in <strong>Suriname<\/strong> and <strong>Ethiopia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Paid for the printing of Haggadot in Hebrew, English, and Shona (the local language) in <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong> for Passover. Though people couldn\u2019t gather for big seders because of the pandemic, these materials allowed people to celebrate at home.<\/li>\n<li>Held online courses in Spanish, French, and English for students from <strong>Nicaragua<\/strong>, <strong>Honduras<\/strong>, <strong>Costa Rica<\/strong>, <strong>El Salvador<\/strong>, <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>, <strong>Senegal<\/strong>, and <strong>Congo<\/strong> on Jewish holidays, Hebrew, Kosher laws, and more.<br \/>\n<em>Fernando Flores Casta\u00f1eda from Guatemala shared:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cKulanu and Genie Milgrom have been a great help and support for our community during the Covid. Through the shiurim and other classes, our community has fortified itself and been able to maintain unity during this trying time of social distancing.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Funded a mobile printing shop run by Jewish young people in Madagascar to make Jewish texts available in Malagasy, the local language.<br \/>\nHelped the community in <strong>Pakistan<\/strong> legally register as a religious community for greater recognition and acceptance.<\/li>\n<li>Helped with the construction of synagogues, mikvahs, and community buildings in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>, <strong>Uganda<\/strong>, <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>, <strong>El Salvador<\/strong>, <strong>Kenya<\/strong>, <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, and <strong>Tanzania<\/strong> to strengthen Jewish communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21391 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Latrines-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1017\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Latrines-1.png 1017w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Latrines-1-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Latrines-1-768x320.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Development: Creating Sustainable Solutions to Aid Jewish Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contributed funds to the village of Apac in <strong>Uganda<\/strong> for materials, so volunteers from the local community, with minimal help from paid workers, could build three log-cabin school classrooms, new latrine toilets, and a micro-credit office\/community center.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to fund the operations of the Harare Lemba Synagogue in <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong> as a synagogue, community center, and a base for ground-breaking projects to improve water, power, and agriculture in rural Lemba communities.<\/li>\n<li>Assisted Save the Rain in supporting a rainwater harvesting system in a newly forming kibbutz in Enugu, <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>, and helped Drink Water, and Drink Tap build latrines in Namonyonyi, <strong>Uganda<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHelped with agriculture projects in <strong>Uganda<\/strong>, <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>, <strong>Cameroon<\/strong>, and <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Secured a solar-powered water pump in <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong> to reduce operating costs.<\/li>\n<li>Worked with schools in <strong>Uganda<\/strong> during the lockdown period to continue limited operations when allowed and to plan for the future. (Schools are scheduled to reopen now in January.)<\/li>\n<li>Sent food relief to communities in need in <strong>Uganda<\/strong> and <strong>Kenya<\/strong> during the lockdowns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21392 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guatemala-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1015\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guatemala-1.png 1015w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guatemala-1-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/Guatemala-1-768x325.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Networking: Connecting Communities to Each Other and to the Wider World<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continued our Online Speaker Series featuring partner communities in <strong>Indonesia<\/strong>, <strong>Cameroon<\/strong>, <strong>Majorca<\/strong>, <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>, <strong>India<\/strong>, and <strong>Suriname<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Welcomed new communities in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> and <strong>Indonesia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Awarded a mini-grant to Rebeca Orantes from <strong>Guatemala<\/strong> to help her enter Hebrew Union College Rabbinical School, and one to Guershon Nduwa from <strong>France<\/strong> to do an online pre-rabbinic program of Seminario Rabinico located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to sell embroidered challah covers from <strong>Ghana<\/strong>, made famous by the film \u201cDoing Jewish: A Story from Ghana.\u201d These challah covers serve as Kulanu \u2018ambassadors,\u2019 helping recipients feel connected to Jews in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Funded technology and internet costs in <strong>Ghana<\/strong>, <strong>Cameroon<\/strong>, <strong>Kenya<\/strong>, <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>, <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong>, and <strong>Uganda<\/strong> to connect community members to teachers and other resources.<\/li>\n<li>Dedicated the guest house in Sefwi Wiawso, <strong>Ghana<\/strong> in memory of Dr. Michael Gershowitz.<\/li>\n<li>Welcomed David Breakstone, Lili Kaufmann, and Ben Lefkowitz to Kulanu\u2019s board \u2013 each of them adding years of experience, wisdom, and connections to our team.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to inspire and engage people all over the world by sharing the stories of Kulanu partner communities through our website, videos, social networking, magazines, press coverage, TV and radio, speaking engagements, and conference participation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/give\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DONATE NOW!<\/strong><\/a> Any donations made through January 10, 2022 (up to $60,000), will be matched by a generous donor.<\/p>\n<div><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kulanu.org\/archive\/2020-annual-report\/\">Click here to see past annual reports.<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>View our 2021 Annual Report presentation below or scroll down to read the 2021 Annual Report.
