Please attend a very unique event at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, MD.Â This is going to be a really special — and free! — shabbat performance. Carlos CortÃ©s lectures around the world on multiculturalism and education — he is a professor of history at UC Riverside, and cultural consultant for Nickelodeon’s pre-school series, “Dora the Explorer” and “Go Diego Go”. A Conversation with Alana: One Boy’s Multicultural Rite of Passage on Friday, May 8. (See below and flyer for details.)Â Alana is a one hour, one person autobiographical play written and performed by Dr. Carlos CortÃ©s. In his play, CortÃ©s presents his story of growing up as a young man of mixed ancestry in racially segregated, religiously divided early post World War II Kansas City, MO.
The son of a Mexican Catholic immigrant father and a U.S.-born Jewish mother, CortÃ©s had to learn to navigate Kansas City’s rigid racial, ethnic and religious fault lines, while simultaneously dealing with the internal conflicts of his own divided family
We’ll start with kabbalat shabbat services at 6:30pm outside (weather permitting). Folks who would like to share a shabbat meal are welcome to sign up on the Adat Shalom listerve for “Taste of Shabbat” ($18/person for the meal. BYO wine). go to www.adatshalom.net to sign up for the dinner.
The performance starts at 8pm and is FREE. A short concluding service will be at 9pm. For those who wish to stay after services, we’ll gather for an informal conversation with Carlos CortÃ©s.
Book-ended by Shabbat services and an optional $18 dinner (www.adatshalom.net to order) you are absolutely welcome to spend the evening or attend just the 8:00 1 hr. presentation plus closing service. The theater piece is not for young children yet high schoolers who can handle something a little edgy are encouraged to attend.
